Willwriting Academy

The Willwriting Academy was formed in 2009 as the training arm of the IPW.

Its main aim is to provide high quality, affordable training for all professionals involved in Wills and probate, delivered by highly experienced and knowledgeable presenters.  It currently hosts courses for new starters and more experienced members and non-members alike on topics including Mental capacity issues, trusts, estate administration and taxation. It is constantly developing new courses and forming relationships with expert presenters in order to deliver the best quality courses.

Continuing Professional Development

The Institute has a programme of Continuing Professional Development to ensure that all members of every level develop their skills and keep abreast of changes in the law in order to offer a first-class service to their clients.

Other Courses:-
The Willwriting Academy Limited runs regular specialist courses on topics related to Wills, such as

  • Probate, Confirmation & Estate Administration
  • Advising Elderly Clients
  • Inheritance Tax Planning
  • Care Home Fee Planning

All courses run by the Willwriting Academy Limited are open to non-members. Details of forthcoming events are published in the Diary area of this website.

Details of forthcoming events run by the Institute and by other selected recognised providers of legal training are published in the Diary area of this website

Members should be aware that not all training courses and not all training providers are acceptable providers of qualifying CPD. A list of approved providers can be downloaded here.

This does not mean that providers who are not on this list are not acceptable CPD providers but members should check with the Institute before booking training with a training provider who is not on this list.

Training Courses

All training by the Institute is provided by the Willwriting Academy Limited. 
For Full and Affiliate Members who want to take instructions for Wills and to draft Wills. 

Introduction to Willwriting Course 
A one-day course held four times each year covering the basics and practicalities of becoming a professional Willwriter and running a successful practice.

Willwriting in Practice Course 
A three-day course, held four times each year, one month before each examination, expanding on the introductory course and equipping the student for a programme of home-study leading up to the examination. The course includes both legal theory and the practical skills necessary to ascertain a client's needs and circumstances in order to provide them with an appropriate Will.
For Sponsored Members who want to take instructions for Wills only and have their documents drafted by another Institute Member. 

Introduction to Willwriting Course 
A one-day course held four times each year covering the basics and practicalities of becoming a professional Willwriter and running a successful practice.

Will Instruction Taking in Practice Course 
A two-day course, held four times each year, one month before each examination, expanding on the introductory course and equipping the student for a programme of home-study leading up to the examination. The course includes both legal theory and the practical skills necessary to ascertain a client's needs and circumstances in order to provide them with an appropriate Will.
For Associate Members who want to take instructions only on behalf of an existing Institute member firm.

Taking Will Instructions Course and Examination
A one-day course held six times each year covering the basics of taking Will instructions and giving advice to clients. The day ends with a 1 hour written examination paper and a role play taking Will instructions.
