Over 50% of UK Adults have not yet made a will, and
sadly, if they die before making one, the consequences for their loved ones and
dependants could be painfully difficult, complicated and could be catastrophic.
In simple terms, if you die without a valid Will
in place, the ‘laws of Intestacy’ determine what happens to your ‘estate’.
Intestacy is what the law says, but is often NOT what people want to happen.
Using the services of an IPW member can help to ensure that your final requests
are adhered to, and that your loved ones will be taken care of in line with
your wishes.
Wills reflect your ‘current’ wishes, so they need to be
reviewed, and changed as things change in your life.
There really is, a simple choice. Here are some things to
consider:
You will need to make a valid will to:
- Make sure somebody you choose, takes care of things for you
- Make sure your wife/husband inherits everything
- Make provision for your children and other people / relatives / stepchildren etc.
- Give some gifts to certain people, e.g. some money
- Give a legacy to charity from your estate
- Make sure your assets are protected properly and go to the right people at the right time
- Make provision for a vulnerable / disabled person or children
- Make sure my partner (I’m not married) is taken care of
- Appoint guardians for your children
There are many other reasons why people should make a
Will. The IPW recommend you have professional help to make sure things are done
properly. Don’t leave it to the state to
decide, make sure you are in control.
