Led By Michael Budden, Lawyer, Tax Adviser & Financial Planner, this is a one-day course to further develop knowledge and skills of more experienced Willwriters of the law and practice of taxation especially in relation to Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

This course consolidates and further expands on the Introduction to Taxation course with the use of examples and computations. More details on exemptions, reliefs.

Full Course Details

Aims:    A one-day course to further develop knowledge and skills of more experienced Willwriters of the law and practice of taxation especially in relation to Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Capital Gains Tax (CGT). This course consolidates and further expands on the Introduction to Taxation course, with the use of examples,  computations and brief case studies.

 

Prerequisites:  Have passed the IPW entrance exam, or an equivalent exam accepted by the IPW. Having attended the IPW courses in respect of Trusts (or an equivalent course accepted by IPW) and Introduction to Taxation. Have at least 12 months Willwriting experience OR written (full members)  or have taken instructions for (associate members) at least 30 Wills.

 

Outcomes:  By the end of the course, with the aid of their course notes delegates will be able to identify and explain:

 

  1. How to advise clients on the consequences and benefits of tax planning in both lifetime and the Will
  2. The IHT and CGT consequences of lifetime gifts, including reliefs, exemptions and anti-avoidance
  3. Issues regarding the Nil Rate Band and Residence Nil Rate Band
  4. The importance of Business Property Relief (BPR), issues to consider and anti-avoidance provisions
  5. The importance of Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and issues to consider
  6. The use and taxation of trusts both in lifetime and in the Will
  7. Domicile considerations and their impact on taxation
  8. Tax issues that may arise through the provisions of a Will
