Led By Paul Seal , Chartered Accountant, Fellow of the Institute of Taxation and  Deputy Chair of STEP, this is a one-day course to further develop knowledge and skills of more experienced Willwriters of the law and practice of taxation especially in relation to Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

This course consolidates and further expands on the Introduction to Taxation course with the use of examples and computations. More details on exemptions, reliefs.


Full Course Details

Aims:    A one-day course to further develop knowledge and skills of more experienced Willwriters of the law and practice of taxation especially in relation to Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Capital Gains Tax (CGT). This course consolidates and further expands on the Introduction to Taxation course with the use of examples and computations.

Prerequisites:  Have passed the IPW entrance exam, or an equivalent exam accepted by the IPW.

Having attended the IPW courses in respect of Trusts (or an equivalent course accepted by IPW) and Introduction to Taxation.

Have at least 12 months Willwriting experience OR written (full members) or have taken instructions for (associate members) at least 30 Wills.

Outcomes:  By the end of the course, with the aid of their course notes delegates will be able to state:

  1. How to advise clients on the consequences or benefits of tax planning in both lifetime and the Will
  2. Lifetime giving reliefs and exemptions
  3. Effectively utilising annual allowances
  4. Purchasing annuities, insurance policies, lifetime care plans and discounted gift trusts
  5. What Business Property Relief (BPR) is, when it applies and how to apply it
  6. What Agricultural Property Relief (APR) is, when it applies and how to apply it
  7. What a Potentially Exempt Transfer is (PET)
  8. Gifts with Reservation of Benefit
  9. Use of trusts
  10. Taxation of trusts
  11. Calculating the periodic charge
  12. Holdover relief
  13. Pilot Trusts
  14. Effect of domicile on taxation issues
  15. Residence Nil rate Band
  16. Downsizing rules
  17. The Transferable Nil Rate Bands
