The Institute of Professional Willwriters (IPW) is delighted to announce a partnership with ILEX Tutorial College (ITC), the educational division wholly owned by the Institute of Legal Executives, which will allow IPW members to obtain effective and accessible high quality training in Wills, Probate and related legal matters under the law of England and Wales.
ITC has over 3,000 students studying by distance learning at any one time. These include aspiring solicitors and legal executives, and legal support staff, from local authorities, government departments and commercial organisations, as well as from ITC's client organisations such as the Crown Prosecution Service.
IPW members will be able to access any of the ILEX courses offered by ITC, but in particular:
Level 3 modules
Law unit:
Law of Wills & Succession
The above unit costs £295 incl VAT, but is available at a discount of 10% (£265.50) to IPW members.
Student members of the IPW who successfully complete this module will qualify for exemption from the IPW entrance examination and will be part of the way towards obtaining a recognised qualification in the area of law in which they practice.
Legal Practice units:
The Practice of Law for the Elderley Client
Members of the IPW who successfully complete this module will be able to justify to insurers that they are competent to provide Lasting Powers of Attorney.
Probate Practice
Each of the above units cost £325 incl VAT each, but are available at a discount of 10% (£292.50) to IPW members More information about the content and course structure of each of the above units can be found by clicking the link for each subject area.
IPW members should note that in addition to the above fees, in order to be examined they will need to become members of ILEX. This costs either £85 or £110 in year 1 depending on how many years’ experience and any legal qualifications already achieved. Students also pay an ILEX examination fee of £58 per unit. Exams are held in January and June.
IPW Members who successfully complete the law unit and one of the practice units can use them as credits towards the ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice.
Level 3 is equivalent to A levels in terms of academic standard.
Level 6 modules
Law Units:
Law of Wills & Succession
Law of Equity & Trusts
Each of the above units costs £540 incl VAT, but are available at a discount of 10% (£486) to IPW members.
Practice Unit:
Probate Practice
The above unit costs £570 incl VAT, but is available at a discount of 10% (£513) to IPW members.
Members of the IPW who successfully complete this module will be able to justify to insurers that they are competent to provide estate administration services.

IPW members should note that in addition to the above fees, in order to be examined they can either :
• become a member of ILEX, which costs either £85 or £110 in year 1 depending on how many years’ experience and any legal qualifications already achieved; or
• pay a non member fee of £40
The ILEX examination fee for each Level 6 unit is £96. Exams are held in January and June.
Level 6 students are also recommended to buy an additional text book and statute book.
IPW Members who successfully complete the above units can use them as credits towards the
ILEX Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice
Level 6 which is equivalent to honours degree level in terms of academic difficulty.
All courses are designed to be delivered by distance learning but are supported by:
• Induction days in a number of locations around the UK
• Face to face revision days in London and Manchester. These could be delivered specifically to IPW members at a mutually convenient location subject to demand.
